Not-so-secret Relationship

You and I have a love so secret that not even you know about it – Jarod Kintz, Love quotes for the ages. Specifically ages 18-81.

Oh how I wish that is how my case and my so-called “crush”.  Then I can be spared of the embarrassment.

But that’s so not it.  All the hints dropping and flirting was actually obvious that his parents and sister know about it.  His mother even jokes about him flirting me, and don’t even get me started on the reaction of his sister.  Of course, my friends knew all about it.  I can’t stop talking about him then, and thank you God for blessing me with such best friends that put up with my nonsense crush.  It was clear that we had feelings for each other.  We both responded to each other.

But then suddenly he goes and proposed other girl.  It was so confusing and heartbreaking when I heard about his engagement.  Later that week, his sister came to see me with hugs and kisses, and starting to talk to me like normal, as if her brother wasn't engaged to be married.

After talking to my friends and upon self-reflect, I realized we just flirted with each other.  It was harmless, and maybe it was my fault for taking it the wrong way.  It's not as if we were exclusive or anything like that.  He's just being nice. Maybe.

Today, his sister came to see me again.  She handed me his wedding invitation.  It’s going to be a September wedding.  Unfortunately, my pride got the best of me so as I chuckled nervously, I told her that I may not be able to attend the wedding because I have a two-day conference, all the while gathering my strength, trying to hide my height of anger and frustration.  She responded by saying “Oh really? Too bad… Hey you know what, what about dinner with me and my friends tomorrow?”

I should have refused politely.  I should not have asked why.  She wants me to help out with the wedding, specifically with photo booth props and design a personalised wedding favours.  I just took a frontal snapping punch strike, full-life combo kick and died.

Complaints

Living is hard. Well now is not my finest moment because I may regret posting this but darn it I hate this red tape and administration issues. I mean come on people, we all got our own work. Lif is hard on me, too but do you see or hear me complaining about it to every single person I bump into? You're just asking for this. Its been 3 weeks but my registration is not yet settled. And blaming game, here we go.

Face Off SyFy

I am a big fan of SyFy's Face Off.  It's a reality show competition about movie magic, about the special-effect makeup world.  I have girl crush on the host, McKenzie Westmore (her father is the Emmy Award winner for his work on Star Trek.  Amazing, right?!) and I love Ve Neill.  Also, Mr Westmore is amazing on TV.  The show is genuine and intense, I am hooked ever since season 1!!!

Then I got notification from Twitter saying the McKenzie Westmore is now following me on Twitter!!!  Despite my cold and fever, I can't stop grinning for the whole day! My cousins came over to visit me and I can't stop talking about her, until my cousin said 'you sound terrible on the phone but now you looked happy.  I guess that's a good sign' and I was like yea, my girl crush is following on Twitter.  Not just any girl crush, but my ultimate girl crush for few years.  So yeah...

Must refrain from being creepy, now...

Piercings

I watched this Japanese anime where a girl was lying about her age.  She was 20+ but pretending to be a high school student. But because of her pierced ears, the other kids found out her real age.  Really? Piercing after high school?  I got my first piercing at 7. Yup. Seven. Is it that big of a deal? It's a normal thing in my family, because my grandma believe in gold. She gave me gold studded earrings with rubies. It was beautiful. Until I grow up to hate it. I'm bored with it and want a new earring when I was ten.

Well, wearing an earring in school is okay, too. Just pair of earrings. That's it. No more or less. But then the only piercing I'm allowed is just that. Not on my nose or belly or any other place. Just my ears. In fact, some of my friends got their piercing when they're 2 years old. So they won't remember the pain, and not a on other places than the one the parents want it to be.

I don't exactly remember the pain, either. It was just sharp tingling sensation. Which is why I don't understand why some parents ask their daughter to wait until a certain age to get piercing.  I mean, beauty is pain (though I don't like that phrase because I believe beauty means confident in yourself).   Because I got my piercing early, done by professionals, so no pain.  Also, and that's the only piercing I have. I did asked for another piercings on top of my ears during my rebellious teen years but my mom brushed me off by saying "I gave you piercings once, and that's it young lady".

In gold we trust, as I saw this quote on the internet. Remind me so much about my grandma

The Liebster Award

Last week I was nominated for the Liebster Award by the amazing https://chibigalinda.wordpress.com/, mommy to a super adorable son who loves Doctor Who, Pokemon, Makeup, and Video games.  It is a booster for me to keep blogging, and for that I’d like to thank her (。◕‿◕。) Do check her blog by clicking the link https://chibigalinda.wordpress.com/

The Official Rules of The Liebster Award

If you have been nominated for The Liebster Award AND YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT, write a blog post about the Liebster award in which you:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog.
  1. Display the award on your blog — by including it in your post and/or displaying it using a “widget” or a “gadget”. (Note that the best way to do this is to save the image to your own computer and then upload it to your blog post.)
  1. Answer 11 questions about yourself, which will be provided to you by the person who nominated you.
  1. Provide 11 random facts about yourself.
  1. Nominate 5 – 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award, who have a less than 1000 followers. (Note that you can always ask the blog owner this since not all blogs display a widget that lets the readers know this information!)
  1. Create a new list of questions for the blogger to answer.
  1. List these rules in your post. Once you have written and published it, you then have to:
  1. Inform the people/blogs that you nominated that they have been nominated for the Liebster award and provide a link for them to your post so that they can learn about it (they might not have ever heard of it!)

Or you could check it here (this is where I copy and paste all these regulations from): http://wordingwell.com/the-liebster-award-the-official-rules-my-first-blog-award-and-a-few-personal-secrets-revealed/

So here goes!  These were questions by https://chibigalinda.wordpress.com/

  1. How did you come up with your blog name?
Raising Sumaiyah means I am still growing up.  Adulthood is.... overrated at best.

  1. What is your guilty pleasure food?
When it comes to dessert, I am a sinner.  Whenever I have the urge to overindulge, I always go this local place called Eat Me Artisanal Dessert to have their Shibuya Honey Bunch and Nutella Chill Pill.  Sugary, buttery, creamy, chocolaty…

  1. Where is your favourite place to spend time?
Well, I don’t really mind the where as much as I care about the who.  I am that kind of a person who enjoys good company.  But I do love long walks with my friends where we could spill our guts on anything and everything about anyone

  1. Favourite TV show?
All time favourite would be Leverage and Criminal Minds, but I am currently hooked with  Person of Interest

  1. What kind of music do you like?
I love Escala.  They play instrument like no one’s business.

  1. What colour are your eyes?
Dark brown

  1. What movie will you admit to watching way too many times?
Spirited Away.  I love anime and I absolutely love Hayao Miyazaki’s work

  1. What inspires you to blog?
I love reading other people’s blog.  It’s like their own personal journal, and they invite me to peek inside their thoughts, knowledge, journey, opinions and experience.  Also if I die, my family and friends still find a piece of me, the proof of my existence (I think…)

  1. What’s the one item you carry with you everywhere you go?
My phone and the book I’m currently reading

  1. What is the weirdest habit you have?
I love to smell things, especially the book I'm about to read. And my hair.

  1. What was the last book you read?
Still Alice by Lisa Genova

11 random facts about me:

  • Complete chocoholic

  • My pet fish is called ‘Mini’, short for ‘Mini Monster’ because despite his size, he eats like me. He’s a red Betta splendens

  • My all-time favourite anime are Detective Conan, YuYu Hakusho, and Fairy Tail

  • I never had any surgery

  • Contact lens freaks me out.

  • Thailand is the first foreign country I visited

  • My father was an English teacher and my mother is an auditor

  • I love Audrey Hepburn, especially Eliza Doolittle.  'How do you do?'

  • I'm not a romantic person, but darn it I fell in love with Pablo Neruda’s poems

  • My goal this year is to read 50 novels.  Or more if possible

  • I am listening to Counting Stars – OneRepublic

Okay, TMI, TMI.  With that, I nominate these blogs:

My questions for all you are:

  1. When you were five what did you want to be?

  2. What would constitute a perfect day for you?

  3. What is the meaning behind your name?

  4. Have you ever truly feared for your life?

  5. What’s the most valuable thing you’ve wrecked?

  6. If you could be best friends with any historical figure, who would it be?

  7. What kind of fashion sense attracts you?

  8. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

  9. Which film do you wish you were the main character in?

  10. Who in your life makes you feel like you’re amazing?

  11. If you were the only person in the world with superpowers, would you feel lonely?

*Thank you for reading such a long post about some weird strangers who has nothing to do with you ;)

Grad School Blues

It’s been a while since I’ve take a peek on my thesis.  It’s not an impasse, but rather a... repose, maybe..?  But it still is irresponsible of me to shift my focus on other things, when my thesis is halfway through.  So now I'm trying to spark the fire and keep it burning, hard.

Rather lately many people asked me on how ‘easy’ grad school is.  So to those whom I’ve shrugged or ignore, here comes my answer:

Oh then to those who asked me when I will start my own family:

Well, after all this is how I spend most of my day, after all.  So yea... labour is taking more than it supposed to...

Oh yea.  Then there's this.

I am literally crying for my mum right now.  In desperation.  For no apparent reason, really.

William’s Corner Kelana Jaya

This evening both N.Aida.Z and I went to Paradigm Mall to buy wedding gifts for our mutual friend.  After that, I got hungry and started looking at  pictures of chocolate cake pops (sorry Aida, didn’t mean to).  So we decided to go to William’s Corner Kelana Jaya.

This restaurant is also called ‘mamak’ (according to my Instagram) due to its open air system and most tables are located outside the buildings.  There is no menu prepared, but they do have it handwritten on the blackboard inside at the kitchen.  So, the rumour has it that they served big portion of food.  In the beginning we both want to share a meal and a drink, but the waiter convinced both of us that the famous seafood fried rice is not so huge, that it may not be enough for two person.  Since this is our first time here, we listened to him.  So we both ordered another plate of pasta arrabiata.

The service is fast, which is good, but lordy lordy the food is HUGE!!!  First to come is the soda herbs.  It looks pretty with sour plum, lemongrass, lemon, mint, and longan.  For me it’s an acquired taste and a little too sweet for our liking.

I've said it before and I'm gonna say it again.  This is huge!  Actually we can't finish this, unfortunately...  But i do bring it home for my brother

When the infamous fried rice is served we both giggle because of the size.  It is for two person.  But hey, if one is really hungry and/or in need for carbo load, yeah, maybe they can finish it all by themselves.  But not for us regular folks, we both shared the fried rice.  It is served with soft-shell crab with a pile of seafood-packed rice.  We managed to finish the fried rice.

Mountain of rice

Then the pasta came.  Once again, we both can only express our feelings by giggling.  It is ENORMOUS.  I think three people can share the meal.  The biggest plate of pasta I’ve ever eaten.  We both are grateful that I did not choose creamy carbonara or alfredo, which will be far more difficult to finish.  But then the arrabiata sauce is very nice (with hidden bird’s eye chilli, which makes it extra hot, just the way I like it) with slices of grilled lamb, lots of meatballs, and a great deal of beef pepperoni.  I also liked the fact that the meatball is homemade with cheese in the middle.  It suited our palate and looked tasty that two other people asked what we ordered.

The ever so generous pasta dish

Amazingly, we finished the pasta.  But, it took us almost two hours to finish everything in one sitting.  But, we’re both happy in the end and that is all that matters.  Even so, we promised each other that we’ll never do this again, that we will SHARE our food at William’s Corner.

Yet Another New Year Resolution

New Year, new resolution... Oh well, I'm keeping it simple this year; to actually finish my thesis, to save money for a nice vacation with my best friends, be nicer to people, to say 'I love you' more often to my family, and to read more books.

Speaking about reading more books, I was thinking of making a reading list.  The list could be anything, like the same author, or time travel, sleuthing, magic, took place in France... and the list goes on.  Each list should contain at least 5 books, no compromise or skipping between lists.  I've started reading Doctor Sleep, and I should finish by tonight.  Now it is time to categorize this book.  I was thinking to list it as sequel, but it is too broad.  Maybe immortal or ESP.  I need to finish this book first, but I am pretty excited about this book lists.  I never done this before, so I am committed (for the rest of the year I hope) to stay on course.  We’ll see.

Iftar/Picnic

It is the month of Ramadhan where Muslims around the world performs the third pillars of Islam by fasting for a month.  Being away from family especially during this month does make you to keep your friends as close as possible.  It is sad to be alone in celebrating the blessed month of Ramadhan.  Basically during iftar I break my fast with my few housemates.  It’s a routine for the last 9 days.

Yesterday one of my friends, Nora Adila spontaneously came up with an idea for iftar; picnic!  Ok the last time I went to a picnic is quite some ago. So I was thrilled with the idea.  It sounds so much fun, and we had all the utensils at the ready.  Then, we started making a list of foods we need, and it came down to us that we could never cook anything on time if we were to proceed with our picnic/iftar plan.  Instead, the five of us decided to buy from the nearest food bazaar.  It was 6 p.m. (iftar is at 7.30 p.m. so the bazaar is at its peak and crowded with people buying foods) and we took about 45 minutes to get everything we needed.  That is a long time for we all know the bazaar like it was written on our hands (+_+)’’

Then we rushed to the picnic spot, a field next to the Shah Alam Mosque.  The parking spot was a challenge.  So does finding a nice spot for us to sit and wait for iftar.  there are so many people, it looks like there is some kind of festival going on.  But we managed to fine nice spot, a bit far from our cars but we made do.  Right after we set the place and foods, we could hear the imam at the mosque reciting iftar dua, and shortly after that, the Maghrib adzan is filling in the air.

Since us all in a rush, we forgot about dates, which are a bit of a turndown, so we break our fast with water. But overall we all had so much fun having iftar in a nice field, with a lot of other people, too.  It is my first iftar/picnic, so it has a special place in my heart.  Hope I can do it again sometime soon =)

You don't need a certain number of friends, but a number of friends that you can be certain of

Chocolate is the best medicine

Yesterday I went to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur to satisfy my sweet tooth with my three friends.  Usually from Shah Alam to Kuala Lumpur took an hour the most, yet the traffic was so congested, we’re stuck for almost 4 hours!!! We were all hungry and tired in the car, four of us.  But we have some fun in the car, like singing and making jokes out of each other.  Then we spotted this...

We first think he's an off-duty traffic officer, but his instructions and signals are off and messed up so yeah...  it's kinda hilarious especially when you’re bored in car.

And finally when we arrived, it took us almost another 30 mins to find parking space (T__T) but when we finally do, the relief... I've never been so grateful to arrived at your destination.  But, the wait was worth it.  Look at these babies...
So cute I couldn't wait to fork in!!!

Whoever said laughter is the best medicine clearly never had this before~

Wishes and hopes

My eight year-old cousin Syabil Iman just been operated for burst appendix... and it just kills me to see him in such a state for he is such an active little man.  He was in a lot of pain with tubes and wired going on his nose and fragile little hands that he asked his mother “mom, it hurts so bad. What did I do wrong now?” My aunt said “no sweetheart, you did nothing wrong” with a big smile to contain her true feelings.  Then she turns to my mother and cry at my mum’s shoulder.  Then Syabil, with his weak little arm said to my aunt “mom, don’t cry because of me. I am sorry...”

That just broke my heart.  I promise him that when he got better, i will take him shopping and he can use my laptop to play games all day long.  That is all I can do for him now, which makes me feel hopeless, really... but then, I cannot do anything, can I?

Syabil Iman tried to look good for the camera...
Syabil, you are one strong person and adore you for that.  I will keep on praying for your health so be strong sweetie.  To my aunt, keep on the positive attitudes and take care of yourself and the baby inside.  I’ll be here if you ever need me.

The Unromantic Orient

This book is actually written in Germany, a travelogue by a journalist Muhammad Asad or formerly known as Leopold Weiss.  The journey took place in Middle East such as Egypt, Damascus, Jordan, Palestine and Istanbul.

In his journey, he revealed the reason of his conversion to Islam in 1926.  Not only that, he also becomes an Islamic scholar, also known as one of the most influential European Muslim in the 20th century.

This book left deep imprint in my heart, as it took me to an outstanding and extraordinary journey in finding the true meaning of life.  As quoted from the translator, “as I started to read it, the travelogue became my own journey also”, is exactly what I felt.

He is truly an amazing journalist and as a Muslim reader, I absolutely felt deep spiritual connection with his journey.  It also made me wanting to seek more salvation from Allah, and rethinking about myself, “am I a good Muslim?” and “do I truly embrace my religion?”  I’ve been reading a lot of books now to enhance my understanding of Islam, all because of this travelogue.  A saying goes “A good book has no ending (R.D. Cumming)”

One Piece

It was late now and I’m sleepy, but then I am happy because today I made two new friends. Well, technically, they are my friends already, but there is difference between knew them and knowing them. They’re fun to be with and kinda cute. Cute because they are being themselves, honest and they listen. I like the fact that they admit they doesn’t know everything, but I’m also amazed on how good they are when they actually pay attention.

Life is beautiful when you pay more attention to trivial things. As for today, I found another friends which we had something in common and I can express myself to them. Life is indeed deliciously beautiful~

Fall Again

I haven’t updated my blog for a very very long time... Sorry about that, a lot of things happened beyond my expectation, and I have a catch up to do.

Looking back, I am glad that I made it through the ‘new stuffs’. New place, new environment, new friends, new everything. But then still I got stuck and knocked down. Now, I am waiting nervously about my examination result that will be released this very Thursday. It is hard though to skip freshman year and jumped to sophomore without any idea about what the challenge I’m going to face. There are no senior that friendly enough to referred to, the whole batch is weird, most of my classmate… well, most of them did not understand my situation and hardship while the lecturers are intimidating [except for a very few of them that is friendly but then it was halfway through the semester and sure enough it is too late]. As for now, don’t really know what to expect. Sigh…

The fact that I always get depressed now is bugging me. So, I am going to try a lot of new cake recipes I got from my cousin that just got back from New Zealand. Baking makes me happy, so I am going to bake away my nervousness and eat away all the sadness, start with caramel apple cake.

Feel free to join me.

Bittersweet Syawal

My Little Cousins
Syawal is a month where a proud Muslim will celebrate it with happiness and gratefulness as Ramadhan passed by. Syawal has its own feeling. And I’m always looking forward to feel it. The sense and smell of reward, forgiveness, money [!!] makes me appreciate this month every time it arrives. Variety of foods, family gathering, convoy, family reunion [ouch!! I don’t even remember those far relatives. There are too many of them, I can hardly recognize each and everyone specifically], a lot of streaking and owh, duit raya for sure.

Yet, this year’s Syawal is not as fun as past years. The foods, the smells, the feelings are the same. But it lack one thing: my very own lil’ brother. Yea, yea he’s in India, studying like nerds to become a doctor. But heck he is my brother and I miss him badly. My mum didn’t cry in front of us siblings but deep inside I know she was torn apart. When my cousin first departed to Kiwi’s, I felt a little blues but now that my own brother is not here in front of my eyes, it hurts… a lot. But then it is for good.

Yet again, I had so much fun. I eat almost everything on the table, I drink fuzzy-to-fancy drinks, convoy [routine every year], running around foolishly, teasing my cousin till they laugh all right and visiting people that I don’t even know. I think I’ve gain 5 pound which is called as ‘pound of happiness’ and yea I am happy.

I really hope that everyone dear to me feel happy and content all the time. Trouble is a friend but I know somehow the people I love will get over it and live life happily ever after. Hope this year and years to come will bring the goodness in all people that I care about. Amen..

Raising Sumaiyah

The spoiled girl needs to leave home to continue her studies. So long, home sweet home. But the news didn’t excite her as she expected. When she received the news, it was rather dull. She sat silently and called her parents to tell them the news. The parents were grateful but she keeps on complaining. To make things worse, both parents cannot cancel their trip to Jakarta, which on the same date was the girl’s registration day. She was frustrated. She needs to register without her parents. And she is the spoiled girl who barely goes out for shopping without having her parents around.

From Puchong to Bandaraya Melaka with tears. On 4th July 2009, she registered at her college feels mixed up. The long queue, noisy parents, seniors yelling, waiting, catastrophe, more waiting starts to tear her apart. Still, she tried to be positive so that her parents won’t be worried. When she entered her hostel, she sighed. It was on the ninth floor, and the room was meant for 8 students. She picked her bed, and start to unpacked her loads. Then her roommate came in. Petite, cute, and outspoken, she glad she made a friend at last. Her new friend is called Pah (Sharifah). She has summer personality and she liked her. Later that evening, her ex classmate from her Diploma appears. She jumps in excitement. It is good to be in a new place, learn new things and get to know people, but it will be much nicer if she experience all the odds with somebody she knew. And she decided to share all that with Huda. The first day went with emotionally. A whole week to go for orientation.

The second day went, pretty smooth, but she tires out. The new environment makes her start complaining again. And she doubted her decision of changing courses from Office Management to Administrative Science. She wonders if she really made a right decision. The orientation is irritating, no latest news. Most of the things she already knew are told over and over that she almost throws up. The mean facilitators keep on bugging and yelling nonstop she hoped that they will lose their voice and stayed at their rooms sucking popsicles.

There are twists on the third day, when her friend Huda told her about her crush. One of the facilitator, of course. But she barely recognizes which facilitator. They all look the same to her. When Huda shows her the particular facilitator, she instantly judges the book by its cover. The guy looks down to earth, sweet, lone ranger, and a bit of scrappy, but that his style. They even call the guy ‘M’ for Mystery. Huda’s Mystery guy. The Mystery guy of Huda. Potato, potato. Their orientation week is not so boring anymore, now that she had something new to watch; the look that Huda made every time they bumped into M.

It was on the last day of orientation, while she had lunch with Huda. Then the weird man comes and gave his card. He said to Huda “This is my card. Call me, okay? What is your name?” but Huda just gave blank looks so the weird man went away, not without asking Huda to call him, again. The shock state was short then she laughs to tear. The weird man blush but still sit at his table watching Huda. Desperate or pathetic or brave or stupid, you decide for yourself, but as for her, she dislikes that kind of ‘introductory.’ What happened to ‘not talking to strangers?’ This is not a bar or social gathering. That man may be involved with human trafficking. Who knows? That night, there’s this JPK yelled at Huda’s face. Worse, it was in front of M. We are freshie doesn’t indicate you have the right to shriek like a fool or so she thought. The proud Huda felt so tiny by now. Poor her.

At last the orientation finished. It is a wonder that she is still alive, and smile. The spoiled girl is starting to like the new place. Nothing is perfect. The loop hole is what makes something special. Through it, we need to work hard, learn smart and be alert so we can experience the sweetness of being a student in city campus. Of course it will involve tears, sweat and blood, but without it we will never appreciate anything that comes in our live. Youth is a gift, once in a lifetime. Reserve what you want to yourself, but sometimes, open it to new things. Bit by bit, it will help you to grow to be a beautiful person. It will shine inside out. The spoiled girl learnt her lesson: stop complaining!!

I guess you all know who is the spoiled girl, right?

Love & Lucky

Do you believe in soul mate principle? Count me out; even if the sound of it tempted me. But I believed that we must find the right person. Once we meet him/her, it is our responsibility to give and take, listen and remember, watch and learn. We need the whole life to understand someone, there are new things that we discover about our mate, maybe not everyday, but he/she did sometimes surprise us, either in a good way or bad way. If you made a decision to be with someone, then never look back. Nobody’s perfect. Even you yourself have your own weaknesses, even me. All we need is a piece of patience and leave no room for regret. Ever!! Hard though to find someone who complement us which his/her weaknesses and gifts combined with ours, making life beautiful.

Or maybe all need is a little pixie dust and luck. Sounds fairy tale? (Of course the pixie dust part but luck exists) Look around. Can you find people with less effort but find ‘true love thus making the world a happier place to live’? I do. In fact, I’m living with them, eating with them even argue with them, sometimes. Meet my parents (ok, forget the less effort, they were engaged for 3 years. Phew!) My mother is lucky to have a husband like my father and my father is lucky for marrying women like my mother.

The luckiest? Us, the children. We have no heliparents, house full of love and almost everything we wanted. We might disagree with each other sometimes but I always look forward to go home and kiss my parents.

You always need to nurture the relationship and STOP taking things personally. My parents were married for 24 years now, lived happily ever after (real tale). Or maybe, just get lucky!! =]
